Sean Broderick, BA (with Distinction), 1999, Major – Liberal Studies Sean Broderick is a VIU vet. The 46-year-old education professional first attended the school in 1996, when it was called Malaspina University-College. Over the years, he's earned several credentials from the institution, ranging from a diploma to a Master's of Educational Leadership with Distinction (the latter was accompanied by a Governor General's Academic Gold Medal, given for the highest grade point average at VIU's graduate level). |

Adam Baker (Bachelor of Arts '14) is a PhD student in Cognitive and Neural Sciences at Simon Fraser University in the Department of Psychology. He's currently working in the Laboratory for Affective and Developmental Neuroscience as well as collaborating with various neuroscience institutes across Canada and the USA. The aim of his doctoral research is to use novel methods of neuro imaging (EEG, fMRI, TMS) to investigate how biological systems mediate social interactions. |

Dani (Danielle) Smith (Bachelor of Arts ’13, Major in Physical Education, Diploma in Physical Education ’10), a member of Team Canada’s national volleyball team, got her start as a student and varsity athlete at VIU. She attended her first selection camp with the National Team in 2012 after being scouted during the 2012 CCAA National Championships hosted by VIU in Nanaimo – the year she helped the Mariners win gold in the VIU gym! |

The Interior Design Program at Vancouver Island University has been proud to be one of the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) accredited undergraduate programs in Canada since 2016. In January 2017, it became mandatory for Interior Designers seeking to become Registered or Licensed in Canada to graduate from a CIDA Accredited Program. |

My experience might have differed from others in the beginning of my internship in Belize. I was set to intern at a national women’s non-profit organization and had done research on them and some of their pressing initiatives. It was three days before I was scheduled to depart Canada when I was told that there was an internal issue with the organization and that I would not be able to move forward with those plans. |

In Laurent Tran's Master’s program, he studied project management, which included different aspects of monitoring and evaluation (e.g. qualitative and quantitative research methods) both in theory and in practice. This was a skill needed in the development activities in the Kyrgyz Republic, and he accepted a posting there to work as monitoring and evaluation assistant. |

Stephen Hume has done every newspaper job from copy chaser to editor-in-chief and has covered everything from prize fights to prime ministers. He has written for newspapers, magazines and provided commentary for national radio and television. He has been senior writer and columnist at The Vancouver Sun for 27 years. Hume has written nine books of poetry, essays, biography, natural history and history and he has contributed to two dozen more. |

Jay Ruzesky's most recent book is In Antarctica: An Amundsen Pilgrimage (Nightwood 2013) about his voyage to the white continent in the footsteps of his ancestor--Roald Amundsen. Ruzesky’s novel about a medieval monumental astronomical clock is called The Wolsenburg Clock (Thistledown 2009) and was shortlisted for a ReLit Award and for the City of Victoria Butler Book Prize. |
