(You can use this same method on Campus, as well.) ***IMPORTANT NOTE: When sending class list messages from home, you must be logged in to VIU Webmail, which is on the Exchange server where the class lists reside.*** |

Each of Vancouver Island University's employees are legally obligated to protect the privacy and rights of students. You are not permitted to discuss any details about your students with an outside third party, including parents and spouses, without express written permission from the student. Take great care to protect our students. Here are some guidelines and examples: |

Attendance and the "No Show" Policy | September 30, 2019 - 12:21pm |
A student's attendance on the first day of class is expected and the "No Show" policy has been established to remove a student from a class if they do not attend the first day. It is often misunderstood, so we have tried to explain it in detail here to ensure instructors have the ability to enforce it promptly. Attendance beyond the first day of class can also be an issue that you will want to address, and there are policies that will assist you in dealing with those as well. |
Course Prerequisites | January 31, 2022 - 2:23pm |
We encourage faculty to list course prerequisites in their course outlines and/or announce them in the first scheduled class. Although the student is responsible to ensure that they have met the class prerequisites this gives them another opportunity to confirm them. Students are expected to adhere to prerequisites, or to obtain special permission in a timely manner. |
Deans' Honor List | September 30, 2019 - 12:21pm |
Students with an outstanding scholastic record are given special recognition when their names are added to the Deans' Honor List. The Deans' list is produced at the end of the Spring semester. Each student receives a letter signed by the Vice-President Academic. The list is also given to all Deans and posted in the Welcome Centre in building 300. To qualify, a student requires a GPA of 3.67 (A-) or higher, and have accumulated a minimum of 12 credits over the Summer, Fall and Spring semesters. |
Late Registrations and Late Withdrawals | June 11, 2025 - 1:32pm |
Once the waitlist has run its course, providing students with reasonable access to courses based on Vancouver Island University's priority registration system, faculty will have full control over which student will have access to available seats in their class. Late RegistrationThe waitlist period lasts for the first six days of the semester. If a student wishes to register in a course after the waitlist period, they require special permission. |
Grade Appeals | March 23, 2020 - 1:26pm |
The first step for a final grade appeal is for the student to confirm with the instructor that the grade is final. Once this confirmation has been made the appeal procedure is as follows: |
Wait Lists and How They Work | September 30, 2019 - 12:21pm |
Vancouver Island University maintains the concept of open access by operating under a priority registration system. Students are given a registration appointment based on the length of time they have been students here and the number of credits they have completed, not their GPA. This provides them with a better opportunity to enroll in the courses they need to complete their program. |
Digital Copyright | September 30, 2019 - 12:21pm |
Copyright does apply for all internet-based course materials whether accessed via a Web site or via course management systems such as Moodle and WebCT. VIU's Teaching and Learning Centre has provided a great resource - Guidelines to Copyright - on the Technology at VIU page. Further, VIU's policy on the Use of Information Technology - 45.01 is an important policy to review. |
